This Google AI Plus review answers one question: is Google’s cheapest AI plan worth $4.99 a month for you? It covers what the plan really includes according to Google’s own pages, where it stops (and where Gemini‘s $19.99 AI Pro plan takes over), and how it compares with the other cheap plans that now exist, ChatGPT Go at $8 and Grok’s X Subscription Plus, also $8.
The short version: for $4.99 you get 2x the free usage limits, Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash (Google’s October 2026 help page lists Pro from AI Pro up, not Plus), a 128k-token context window, 400 GB of storage you can share with five other people, and a taste of Google’s image and video tools. That’s a lot for the price. The limits are real, though, and the Docs and Sheets help many people expect is listed under AI Pro, not Plus.
โก TL;DR: Google AI Plus Review (October 2026)
๐ฐ Price: $4.99 a month in the US (it was $7.99 until June 8, 2026). About $59.88 a year.
๐ฏ What you get: 2x Free usage limits, Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash (Google’s October 2026 help page lists Pro from AI Pro up) and Deep Research, a 128k context window, 200 Google Flow credits, image and video generation, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Gmail, and 400 GB of storage with family sharing for up to five others.
๐ Free for some: college students outside the US (140+ markets) can claim a year of AI Plus free until December 31, 2026.
๐ก Our take: the best value among the plans compared here for Google users and families. Heavy users and anyone who wants Gemini in Docs and Sheets should look at AI Pro.
โ ๏ธ The catch: “2x Free” is the only usage number Google gives, the context window is an eighth of AI Pro’s, and Flow video comes as 200 credits a month, about 16 eight-second 720p Gemini Omni Flash clips at Google’s listed 12 credits each.
๐ Quick Navigation
๐ก The Bottom Line
Google AI Plus is the cheapest way into Google’s paid AI, and at $4.99 a month it’s hard to argue with: you get 400 GB of storage plus a real step up in AI. It suits people who already live in Gmail, Drive and Photos, and families who can split one plan six ways. It doesn’t suit heavy daily users, people who need long documents in one chat, or anyone who wants Gemini working inside Docs and Sheets. For them, AI Pro at $19.99 is the real plan.
๐ REALITY CHECK
The claim: “Unlock essential tools to boost productivity with 2x access to Gemini.”
The fine print: 2x is measured against the free tier, and Google doesn’t publish what the free tier’s limit is. Its help page says usage limits are compute-based and depend on the prompt, the model and the features you use, so “2x” tells you the order of plans, not how many messages you get.
โ Verdict: Treat Plus as “noticeably more than free”. If you run into limits often, that’s your signal to move up to AI Pro’s 4x.
๐ What’s New in This Update
- Gemini free changed on October 9. Google’s help page says accounts without a plan now default to Auto, with most prompts going to Flash-Lite. The new section below compares Gemini free, Plus and Pro.
- The June 8 price cut still stands. Google dropped AI Plus from $7.99 a month with 200 GB to $4.99 with 400 GB, as 9to5Google reported on the day.
- Gemini model access for Plus is changing in October 2026. Google’s help page says AI Plus will include Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash, with Pro listed from AI Pro up, and that Plus subscribers should get an email saying when it takes effect for them (October 9 is the start date for users without a plan). As of October 14, Google’s One plans page lists “Access to Gemini 3.6 Flash and Deep Research in Gemini” for Plus and the limits help page no longer carries a model table, so Google’s pages now agree. Gemini 4 Argon, launched October 13, is listed for AI Pro and Ultra only (see Is Gemini 4 Argon free?).
- Video in Flow uses credits. Plus includes 200 Google Flow credits with access to Gemini Omni Flash (launched May 19, 2026); video in the Gemini app counts against your usage limits instead. Google’s plan cards no longer use the older “Veo 3.1 Fast” wording.
- NotebookLM became Gemini Notebook on July 16, and Plus gets more Audio Overviews and notebooks than free.
- A free year for students outside the US. College students in 140+ markets can claim one year of AI Plus free until December 31, 2026 (US students get AI Pro instead).
- Cheap rivals, re-checked. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US (since January 2026) and Grok’s cheapest paid plan, The X Subscription Plus, is also $8 (the $10 SuperGrok Lite closed to new sign-ups on October 12), so Plus isn’t the only budget plan, just the cheapest of the three.
๐ฏ What’s Actually In Google AI Plus
Here is everything Google’s own plan pages list for AI Plus, grouped by what you’d use it for:
- Chat: 2x the free tier’s usage limits in the Gemini app, with Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash plus Deep Research. Google’s October 2026 help page lists Pro from AI Pro up, and Plus subscribers should get an email saying when the change reaches their account.
- Long documents: a 128k-token context window, against 32k on free and 1 million on AI Pro. Google says 1 million tokens is about 1,500 pages, so 128k is roughly 190 pages in one go.
- Images and video: more access to image, music and video generation in Gemini and Search, more Nano Banana in Search, and 200 Google Flow credits with Gemini Omni Flash.
- Study and research: Gemini Notebook with more Audio Overviews and notebooks, plus multi-page reports in Gemini.
- Google apps: Gemini in Gmail (proofreading), Vids “and more”. Help in Docs and Sheets is listed under AI Pro.
- Daily Brief in the Gemini app (US only).
- Storage: 400 GB across Gmail, Drive and Photos, with family sharing for up to five others.
Google AI Plus 400 GB storage: what you get
The 400 GB is cloud storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, and you can share the whole plan with up to five other people. For many households that storage alone is the reason to pay.

Gemini free vs Google AI Plus vs Pro: what changed on October 9
Gemini is still free, but the free version works differently since October 9. Google’s help page says Auto is now the default for accounts without a Google AI plan: Gemini sends each prompt to the model it thinks suits it, and “most prompts will go to Flash-Lite, our fastest model.” Turn smart model selection off and every free reply uses Flash-Lite. Google’s Free plan card still lists Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems and image creation and editing, so free is a fair place to start.
The Google AI Plus benefits over free are the 2x usage limits, a 128k context window (free gets 32k), more image and video generation, 200 Flow credits and 400 GB of storage. On Google AI Plus vs Pro, Google’s pages now list only the Flash model for Plus (see the FAQ below), while AI Pro at $19.99 a month, $15 more, lists the Pro model and Gemini 4 Argon with 4x limits. Our first video walks through all three plans:
Is Gemini AI Plus worth it once Google’s model change reaches your account? Our second video covers what Plus keeps, what moves to AI Pro, and what to check in your email and the model picker before you decide:
๐ฐ Google AI Plus Pricing and Plans
AI Plus is the bottom rung of Google’s four-step ladder. Here is the whole ladder, from Google’s subscriptions page:
| Plan | Price | Usage vs Free | Context | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Baseline | 32k tokens | 15 GB |
| AI Plus | $4.99 a month | 2x | 128k tokens | 400 GB |
| AI Pro | $19.99 a month ($199.99 a year) | 4x | 1 million tokens | 5 TB |
| AI Ultra | $99.99 or $199.99 a month | 5x or 20x AI Pro | 1 million tokens | 20 TB or 30 TB |

A year of AI Plus costs $59.88. That’s $180.12 less than a year of ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro billed monthly ($240), and shared by six people it works out to about $0.83 each a month ($1.00 for five, $1.25 for four). The jump to AI Pro quadruples the price for 2x more usage than Plus, about eight times the context, 5 TB of storage, 1,000 Flow credits and Gemini in Docs and Sheets.
๐ฐ Monthly Price: The Cheap AI Plans vs the $20 Plans
So which Google plan should you pick? It mostly comes down to how much you use Gemini each day, and whether you need it inside your documents.
๐ก Key Takeaway: Casual chat, light image and video work and a storage upgrade: AI Plus. Daily heavy use, long documents or Gemini in Docs and Sheets: AI Pro. A household of four to six people splitting one plan: AI Plus costs $0.83 to $1.25 each.
โ๏ธ Google AI Plus vs ChatGPT, Claude, SuperGrok and Perplexity
AI Plus has company at the budget end: ChatGPT Go at $8 and Grok’s X Subscription Plus at $8, which also adds an X checkmark and fewer timeline ads (the $10 SuperGrok Lite closed to new sign-ups on October 12). And the $20 plans are still the default for many people. Here is how they line up on what each company publishes:
| Plan | Monthly | Top model named on the plan | Storage included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 | Gemini 3.6 Flash (Google’s One plans page) | 400 GB |
| ChatGPT Go | $8 | Not compared here | None |
| Grok (X Subscription Plus) | $8 | None named (“Latest Grok models” start at Premium) | None |
| Perplexity Pro | $17 (billed annually) | “Top AI models” | None |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | GPT-6 Sol in chat (rolling out) | None |
| Claude Pro | $20 ($17 annual) | Opus 5.5 | None |
The pattern is simple. AI Plus wins on price, storage and family sharing, and nothing else in the table bundles 400 GB. The $20 plans give you each company’s bigger models and higher limits (ChatGPT Plus: GPT-6 Sol in chat, rolling out since October 7, and GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex; Claude Pro: Opus 5.5), and our ChatGPT review and Claude review cover what that buys. If you’re comparing the budget plans, our SuperGrok price guide covers Grok’s new X Subscription tiers and the older SuperGrok plans, and Perplexity is the research-first option.

๐ Getting Started With Google AI Plus (5 Minutes)
Step 1: Sign Up Through Google One
Go to Google’s AI plans page, sign in, and pick AI Plus at $4.99 a month. If you’re a college student outside the US, check the student offer first: it gives you the same plan free for a year.
Step 2: Open Gemini and Use the Extra Access
Open gemini.google.com or the Gemini app on the same account. Plus gives you Deep Research and, once Google’s October 2026 model changes reach your account, Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash but not Pro, so this is where the 2x limits show up. Plus subscribers should get an email with the date for their account. If you plan to split the plan, add family members through Google One.
Step 3: Try Video in Google Flow
Your 200 Google Flow credits are for Google’s AI creative studio, where Plus includes Gemini Omni Flash. Google lists the cost per clip rather than clips per plan: an 8-second 720p Gemini Omni Flash clip costs 12 credits, so 200 credits buys about 16 of them, on top of the 50 free credits a day every account gets. Costs are per generation and one request can make 2 videos, so watch the balance before planning a bigger project.
Our video does the counting with Google’s own credit cost table: the 50 free Google Flow credits every account gets each day cover 2 clips with Veo 3.1 Fast (20 credits per clip), 5 with Veo 3.1 Lite and none with Veo 3.1 Quality (100 credits). It also covers the peak-hours catch for free accounts and when Plus’s extra 200 credits a month are worth paying for:
๐ฏ Who Should Use Google AI Plus
Google AI Plus Is a Good Fit For:
- People who use Gemini a few times a day and want more than the free tier
- Families of four to six sharing one plan, at $0.83 to $1.25 each a month
- Anyone who needs more Google storage and would like AI in the same bill
- College students outside the US, who can get a year free
- New subscribers who aren’t tied to ChatGPT or Claude yet
Skip Google AI Plus If:
- You regularly work with long documents: AI Pro’s 1 million tokens is about eight times Plus’s 128k
- You hit usage limits often: AI Pro gives 4x the free tier, against Plus’s 2x
- You want Gemini inside Docs and Sheets: Google lists that under AI Pro
- You’re a developer who needs API access: that’s Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, billed separately
- You’ve built your workflow around ChatGPT or Claude, and switching would cost you more time than $15 a month saves

โ ๏ธ Honest Limitations
- 128k context. Roughly 190 pages in one chat. Enough for most documents, not for a book or a big codebase.
- “2x Free” is the only usage figure. Google’s limits are compute-based and refresh on five-hour and weekly windows; there’s no message count to plan around.
- Video has two meters. Video in the Gemini app counts against your usage limits; Google Flow uses 200 credits a month, about 16 eight-second 720p clips at Google’s listed price.
- Gemini in Docs and Sheets is an AI Pro feature. Plus lists Gemini in Gmail (proofreading), Vids and more.
- No API access. Plus gets only “Limited” AI Studio access in Google’s table; expanded limits start at AI Pro, and the paid API is billed separately.
- Family sharing means sharing the 400 GB. It’s one storage pool for everyone in the group. Google’s comparison table also lists a 2 TB version of Plus, tied to the 2 TB Google One plan.
- Some benefits are 18+ only, according to Google’s plans page.
๐งช Four Everyday Jobs, Going by Google’s Own Limits
What does $4.99 a month look like in normal use? Here are four common jobs, with what Google’s own pages say Plus allows for each.
Job 1: Daily Chat and Research
Plus gives 2x the free tier’s limits, with Deep Research and, per Google’s October 2026 help page, Flash-Lite and Flash but not Pro. Google’s limits refresh on five-hour and weekly windows, so a heavy afternoon can eat into your weekly allowance. What it means for you: fine for everyday questions and writing help; if you do long research sessions most days, or you want the Pro model, AI Pro (4x limits, Pro listed) is the safer bet.
Job 2: Short Videos and Images
Plus includes video generation in the Gemini app, more image generation in Gemini and Search, and 200 Google Flow credits with Gemini Omni Flash. What it means for you: enough to try video for social posts or school projects; regular video makers will want AI Pro’s 1,000 Flow credits.
Job 3: Studying With Gemini Notebook
Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, turns your sources into summaries and Audio Overviews, and Plus gets more of them than free. What it means for you: a strong study and research tool at this price. Google lists Plus’s notebook size as “Large”, below AI Pro’s.
Job 4: Email and Google Apps
Plus lists Gemini in Gmail for proofreading, plus Vids and “more”. Drafting help in Docs, formula help in Sheets and AI Overviews of your inbox are listed under AI Pro. What it means for you: if Gemini in your documents is the main reason you’re paying, Plus isn’t the plan for it.

- โ Family sharing with up to five others
- โ Deep Research and Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash

- โ Gemini Pro is listed from AI Pro up under Google’s October 2026 help page
- โ “2x Free” is the only usage figure Google gives
- โ Gemini in Docs and Sheets is listed under AI Pro
- โ 200 Flow credits is about 16 short 720p clips a month
๐ฌ Final Verdict
Among the plans compared here, Google AI Plus is still the best value if you already use Google’s apps. At $4.99 a month, about $59.88 a year, it gives you a real step up from free Gemini, 400 GB of storage and a plan you can share with five other people. Students outside the US can get a year of it free.
Know where it stops. The context window, the 2x limits, the missing Docs and Sheets help and, under Google’s October 2026 help page, the Gemini Pro model are exactly what AI Pro adds for $19.99. And if your work already runs on ChatGPT or Claude, the cheaper price may not be worth the switch. For everyone else, Plus is the easiest yes in AI subscriptions right now.
โ Google AI Plus Review FAQs
Q: Is Google AI Plus worth it?
A: Yes, for most people who already use Google’s apps and don’t need the Pro model, Google AI Plus is worth its $4.99 a month. You get 2x the free usage limits, Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash (Google’s October 2026 help page does not list Pro for Plus), 400 GB of storage and family sharing for up to five others. Heavy users and anyone who wants Gemini in Docs and Sheets should look at AI Pro at $19.99.
Q: When did Google AI Plus drop to $4.99?
A: On June 8, 2026. Google cut it from $7.99 a month with 200 GB of storage to $4.99 with 400 GB.
Q: Google AI Plus vs ChatGPT Plus: which should I pick?
A: AI Plus at $4.99 if price matters and you live in Gmail, Drive and Photos. ChatGPT Plus at $20 if you rely on ChatGPT’s tools and want higher limits and its full toolset. A year of AI Plus costs $180.12 less. If you want OpenAI on a budget, ChatGPT Go is $8 a month.
Q: Can I share Google AI Plus with my family?
A: Yes. Google lists family sharing with up to five others, so six people share one plan and one 400 GB storage pool, at about $0.83 each a month.
Q: Does Google AI Plus include video generation?
A: Yes. Plus includes video generation in the Gemini app and 200 Google Flow credits with Gemini Omni Flash. At Google’s listed 12 credits for an 8-second 720p Gemini Omni Flash clip, that is about 16 clips a month; AI Pro includes 1,000 credits.
Q: What’s the context window on Google AI Plus?
A: 128k tokens, against 32k on free and 1 million on AI Pro. Google says 1 million tokens is about 1,500 pages, so Plus handles roughly 190 pages in one chat.
Q: Does Google AI Plus include developer API access?
A: No. It’s a consumer plan for the Gemini app and Google’s apps. Developers use Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, billed separately; expanded AI Studio limits are listed under AI Pro.
Q: Can students get Google AI Plus free?
A: Yes, outside the US. Eligible college students in over 140 markets (not the US, Canada, Bolivia, Albania, Macau, Hong Kong or Tunisia) can claim a year of AI Plus free until December 31, 2026. It renews at $4.99 a month (or the local equivalent) unless cancelled, and Google requires a valid payment method at sign-up. US college students get AI Pro instead.
Q: Does Google AI Plus include Gemini Pro?
A: Not under Google’s October 2026 changes. Google’s help page lists Gemini Flash-Lite and Flash for AI Plus and adds Pro from AI Pro ($19.99 a month) up, and says Plus subscribers get an email with the date the change reaches their account. As of October 14, Google’s One plans page also lists Gemini 3.6 Flash rather than 3.1 Pro for Plus, and Gemini 4 Argon is for AI Pro and Ultra only. Until that email arrives, check the model menu in Gemini before you pay for Pro.
Q: Is Gemini still free?
A: Yes. Gemini is still free with a Google Account, but since October 9 Google picks the model for free users by default (Auto) and most prompts go to Flash-Lite, its fastest model. Free keeps Deep Research, Canvas, Gems and image creation with standard limits and a 32k context window. Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month doubles the limits.
Q: Is Google AI Plus good?
A: Yes, if you want cheap storage and everyday Gemini. Google AI Plus gives you 400 GB, 2x the free usage limits and family sharing for $4.99 a month, but under Google’s October 2026 help page it covers Flash-Lite and Flash, not Pro. If you need the Pro model, AI Pro at $19.99 a month is the plan that lists it.
