A Claude subscription comes in four versions for individuals: Free, Pro at $20 a month, and two Max tiers at $100 and $200 a month. Anthropic’s pricing page tells you what each one costs. What it never tells you is how much Claude you actually get, because there is no message count for any plan, only multipliers. This guide walks through every Claude plan using Anthropic’s own pricing page and help center, read on October 11, 2026, explains how the usage limits really work, and ends with a simple rule for which plan to buy.
⚡ TL;DR: The Bottom Line
What It Is: Anthropic’s four individual Claude plans: Free, Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x. Same app, different amounts of usage, plus a few tools that only paid plans get.
Prices: Free $0. Pro $20 a month, or $17 a month on the annual plan ($200 up front). Max 5x $100 and Max 20x $200 a month, monthly billing only.
Our Take: Start on Free. Pro is WORTH IT once the Free limit gets in your way or you need Opus, Claude Code or Research. Max DEPENDS on whether Pro’s limit stops you most weeks.
⚠️ The Catch: Anthropic publishes no message or hour count for any plan. “5x” and “20x” are multiples of Pro’s usage per five-hour session, not numbers you can plan a week around.
📑 Quick Navigation
💳 Claude Subscription Plans and Prices (October 2026)
Anthropic’s pricing page lists four plans for individuals. Here is each one with the yearly cost, which the page leaves you to work out:
| Plan | Price | Per year | Usage, in Anthropic’s words | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | A session limit that resets every five hours | None |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month on the annual plan | $240 monthly, $200 annual | At least 5x Free’s usage per five-hour session, plus a weekly limit | Monthly or annual |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | $1,200 | 5x Pro’s usage per five-hour session | Monthly only |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | $2,400 | 20x Pro’s usage per five-hour session | Monthly only |
Three details sit in the fine print. The annual Pro plan is billed once, $200 up front, which saves $40 a year against paying $240 month by month, about 17%. Max has no annual option: Anthropic’s Max help page says it “is currently available as a monthly subscription only.” And these are web prices. The same page says “Mobile pricing may vary,” so subscribing inside the iPhone or Android app can cost a different amount.

🔍 REALITY CHECK
Marketing Claims: “Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro.” (Anthropic’s Max plan card)
What It Really Means: The multiplier applies per five-hour session. Anthropic’s pricing FAQ says Max gives “5x or 20x the usage of Pro per 5-hour session,” and Pro is itself defined as “at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free.” Underneath there is no number: Anthropic says usage depends on your conversations, model and features, “so there’s no fixed message count.”
Verdict: The multipliers tell you how the plans compare to each other, not how many messages you get.
🆓 Claude Free vs Pro: What the $20 Actually Adds
Free covers more than its price suggests. The Free card on Anthropic’s pricing page lists chat on web, desktop and mobile; searching the web, creating files and running code; memory across conversations; connecting your apps and tools; and creating Artifacts. You also get up to five Projects, which are workspaces with their own files and chat history. Anthropic’s release notes say Claude Design, Slides and Docs have been on every plan, including Free, since September 16, and the pricing table ticks them on Free too.
Pro adds two things: more room, and paid-only tools such as Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome and Dashboards. Here is the side by side, from Anthropic’s pricing table and help center:
| What you get | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Usage | A session limit that resets every five hours | At least 5x Free per five-hour session, plus a weekly limit |
| Models | Sonnet and Haiku | Adds Opus; Fable only with usage credits |
| Projects | Up to 5 | Yes |
| Design, Slides and Docs | Yes | Yes |
| Connectors, memory, web search, Artifacts | Yes | Yes |
| Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome, Dashboards (beta) | No | Yes |
| Search and reference past chats | No | Yes |
| Usage credits when you hit a limit | No | Yes |

Claude Code needs one extra note. Anthropic’s pricing FAQ says it “is included in all paid plans” and “shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan, so your work in the terminal and your chats draw from one pool.” For what each paid tool does, see our Claude Code review, Claude in Chrome review and Claude Design review.
💡 Key Takeaway: If you mainly chat, work with files, use Projects or make documents, slides and designs, Free already covers it. The $20 buys more room per session, the Opus models and paid-only tools including Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome and Dashboards.
⏱️ How Claude Usage Limits Work: One Pool, Two Clocks
Anthropic’s pricing FAQ puts the whole system in two sentences: “Every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top. Your activity across Claude on web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code all draws from the same pool.”
Think of it like a phone plan with two caps. A small one refills five hours after your session starts. On paid plans, a bigger weekly one sits on top. Chatting in the browser, using the desktop or phone app, and coding in Claude Code all spend from the same allowance, so a heavy coding afternoon leaves less for chat that week.
The Weekly Clock Is Fixed to Your Account
The weekly limit does not restart seven days after your first message. Anthropic’s Pro help page says weekly limits “reset at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account,” and that the slot stays the same no matter when you subscribed. The limit applies across all models, and Settings > Usage shows your next reset. In Claude Code, the /usage command shows the same bars.
What Uses Your Limit Faster
Anthropic’s usage best practices page lists the factors: message length, the size of attached files, how long the current conversation is, tools such as Research and web search, which model you pick, the effort level, Artifacts, and multi-step tasks like running code or browsing websites. Long chats are the quiet one. Anthropic says longer conversations that trigger automatic context management “consume more of your usage limit,” and suggests starting a new conversation when you get close.
Its own tips for making a plan last: batch related questions into one message, keep reference files in a Project (content there “is cached and counts less against your limits when reused,” until the cache expires after a break), turn extended thinking off when you do not need it, choose a lower effort level for routine tasks, turn off connected apps a conversation does not need, and ask Claude not to search the web when you do not need current information (the last three from Anthropic’s usage and length limits page).

🔍 REALITY CHECK
Marketing Claims: “More usage.” (Anthropic’s Pro plan card)
What It Really Means: More than Free, by a multiplier. Anthropic’s pricing page, Pro and Max help pages and usage articles give no message, prompt or hour count for any plan. How far a plan goes depends on what you send and which model answers.
Verdict: Before you upgrade, watch Settings > Usage for a week. It shows how close you get to each clock, which is the only measure that fits your own use.
🚀 Claude Max 5x vs 20x: Is Max Worth It?
Max is Pro with more room. The Max card begins: “Everything in Pro, plus: Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, Higher output limits for all tasks, Early access to advanced Claude features, Priority access at high traffic times.” On Anthropic’s comparison table, Max lists the same tools as Pro. What changes is the usage, longer outputs, a Fable allowance and a monthly API credit.

The Per-Unit Maths: Max 5x Is Not a Discount
Take Anthropic’s own multipliers and divide each price by how many “Pros” of session usage it buys. Pro monthly costs $20 for one. Max 5x costs $100 for five, which is still $20 each. Only Max 20x gets much cheaper per unit: $200 for twenty is $10 each, half the monthly Pro price. Put another way, Max 20x costs twice as much as Max 5x for four times the usage per session. Pro on the annual plan works out at $16.67 a unit, which beats Max 5x. This is our arithmetic on Anthropic’s per-session multipliers, and Anthropic does not say the weekly limit scales the same way.
📊 What One “Pro’s Worth” of Session Usage Costs on Each Plan (USD a Month)
Fable on Max Does Not Add Room
Max includes Anthropic’s Fable models. Anthropic’s Fable help page says you “can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models at no extra cost,” and that they “draw from your plan’s regular weekly usage limits and use them faster than other Claude models.” So Fable is a share of the same week, not extra on top. On Pro, Fable is only available with usage credits, and it is not on Free. Our Claude Fable review covers what the model is for.
The New Monthly API Credit
Since October 7, Max comes with API credit every month: $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, the same as the plan price. Anthropic’s API credits help page says Free, Pro and Enterprise are not eligible. You claim it on claude.ai under Settings > Billing by linking a Claude Console organization, once you have been on the plan for seven days. It works with the Claude API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. It does not cover interactive Claude Code, extra usage (usage credits), or Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry, and unused credit does not roll over to the next month.
🔍 REALITY CHECK
Marketing Claims: “$100 to $200/month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform.” (Anthropic’s Max plan card)
What It Really Means: The credit is for developers who call Claude from their own code. It does not stretch your chat or Claude Code allowance, it cannot pay for usage credits, and it expires at the end of each billing cycle.
Verdict: Worth real money only if you build on the API. Do not count it as a reason to buy Max for chat or coding.
🧠 Which Claude Models Each Plan Gets
| Model family | Free | Pro | Max 5x and 20x |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Sonnet | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Opus | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fable | No | Usage credits only | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
The current versions are recent: Anthropic launched Opus 5.5 on September 22, Sonnet 5.5 on September 28 and Haiku 5.5 on October 7, 2026. The bigger the model, the faster it uses your limit. Anthropic’s own model guide says: “Haiku is the lightest, Sonnet is moderate, Opus is heavy, and Fable uses the most,” and that using Opus or Fable on a task Sonnet or Haiku could handle may use more of your limit than needed. Our Opus 5.5 vs Sonnet 5.5 comparison and Claude Haiku 5.5 guide go deeper.
One catch for Claude Code users. Anthropic’s Claude Code documentation says the default model on Pro and Max is Opus 5.5, while its Claude Code guide says Sonnet “is the right choice for the large majority of coding work” and that Opus “uses meaningfully more of your quota.” If you hit limits in Claude Code, switching to Sonnet with the /model command is the first thing to try. Effort matters too: the default is Medium in the apps and Claude Code, and Anthropic says lower settings answer faster and use fewer tokens. For how Claude Code compares with a rival $20 plan, see Claude Code vs Cursor.

💸 When You Hit the Limit: Wait, Pay as You Go, or Upgrade
On Free, the only option is to wait for the five-hour reset. Paid plans have three more.
Usage credits. Anthropic’s usage credits page says they let you keep working after your included limits, “billed at standard API rates” and charged separately from your subscription. You turn them on in Settings > Usage and set a monthly spend limit, or choose unlimited. In most cases the credits do not expire. If you know you will need them, Anthropic sells discounted bundles: $50 of credit for $45, $250 for $200, and $1,000 for $700, up to $2,000 of bundles a month, and bundle credit only kicks in after you pass your plan’s limits.
Limit resets. Anthropic says it occasionally gives eligible plans a limit reset that puts your five-hour or weekly limit back to full when you choose to use it. If you have one, it appears in Settings > Usage. Once used, it cannot be undone.
Upgrading. For Claude Code, Anthropic’s help page tells Pro subscribers to consider Max 5x “if you consistently hit limits,” and Max 5x subscribers to consider Max 20x in the same situation. Here is what a year of each step costs:
📈 What a Year of Each Claude Plan Costs (USD, List Price)
👤 Which Claude Plan Should You Buy?

Our rule is simple: stay on the cheapest plan until its limit gets in your way, then go one step up. Anthropic gives no message counts, so the only reliable test is your own Settings > Usage page.
Free: start here. Chat, files, web search, memory, connectors, up to five Projects, and Design, Slides and Docs all cost nothing. If you rarely see the limit message, there is nothing to buy.
Pro: worth it when the five-hour limit interrupts you, or when you need Opus, Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome or Dashboards. Take the annual plan ($200) only if you are sure, since it saves $40 a year but is paid up front.
Max 5x: depends. It makes sense if Pro’s weekly limit stops you most weeks, for example because you run Claude Code every day. You pay for room, not a discount: per unit it costs the same as Pro billed monthly.
Max 20x: depends, leaning skip. It has the best per-unit price, but it costs $2,400 a year. Move up from Max 5x only if you hit that ceiling too.

❓ FAQs: Your Questions Answered
Q: How much is a Claude subscription?
A: Free costs $0. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month on the annual plan ($200 up front). Max 5x is $100 and Max 20x is $200 a month, billed monthly only. These are US web prices.
Q: Is Claude Pro worth it?
A: Yes, if you often hit the Free limit or need Opus, Claude Code, Research or Claude in Chrome. If not, Free already includes Projects, connectors, Design, Slides and Docs.
Q: What is the difference between Claude Free and Pro?
A: Pro gives at least 5x Free’s usage per five-hour session, the Opus models, and Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome and Dashboards (beta). Both include Design, Slides, Docs and connectors.
Q: How many messages do you get with Claude Pro?
A: Anthropic does not publish a number. It says usage depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model and the features you use, “so there’s no fixed message count.”
Q: Claude Max 5x vs 20x: which should I get?
A: Start with Max 5x ($100) unless you use Claude all day. Max 20x ($200) gives four times the per-session usage for twice the price, so it is cheaper per unit. Move up only if you hit the Max 5x ceiling.
Q: Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?
A: Yes. Claude Code is included in Pro and both Max plans, not Free, and it shares one usage pool with your chats.
Q: Is there an annual Claude Max plan?
A: No. Anthropic says Max is currently a monthly subscription only. Pro is the only individual plan with an annual discount.
Q: When do Claude usage limits reset?
A: The session limit resets on a rolling five-hour window. On paid plans, the weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account, shown in Settings > Usage.
Final Verdict: Start Free, Pay When the Limit Gets in Your Way
Claude’s plans are easier to choose than they look, once you accept that Anthropic sells multipliers rather than message counts. Free is genuinely useful, and it includes Design, Slides and Docs. Pro at $20 is the step that unlocks the paid tools: more room, Opus, and Claude Code, Research and Claude in Chrome. Max 5x buys room at the same per-unit price as Pro billed monthly, and Max 20x is the only real bulk discount, at $2,400 a year. The Max API credit is a bonus for developers, not a reason to upgrade.
Verdict: FREE, START HERE. PRO, WORTH IT once the Free limit or a paid-only tool gets in your way. MAX 5x, DEPENDS. MAX 20x, DEPENDS, leaning skip.
