Google AI Ultra vs Pro 2026: Is $99.99 Worth It Over $19.99? (Gemini 4 Argon Update)

🆕 Latest Update: October 10, 2026

Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30 and said it will reach “paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers” first. Google says it is limited to trusted cyber defenders and testers, and it has given no dates. Google AI Ultra is $99.99 a month (5x Pro’s usage) or $199.99 a month (20x), against $19.99 for Google AI Pro. Based on Google’s own plans, help center and announcement pages and our research.

Google AI Ultra vs Pro is a five-to-ten-times price gap: Ultra costs five times as much as Google AI Pro, and ten times as much at its top tier. The question got louder when Google said its new Gemini 4 Argon model will come to Ultra subscribers first. This page answers it with Google’s own numbers from October 10, 2026: what each plan costs, what Ultra adds over Pro (and what it does not), what Google has and has not said about Argon, and which plan fits which person.

⚡ TL;DR: The Bottom Line

What It Is: Google AI Ultra is the top Google AI plan: $99.99 a month for 5x the usage of Google AI Pro, or $199.99 a month for 20x. Pro is $19.99 a month.

What Ultra Adds: Higher limits, Deep Think (Ultra only), 10,000 or 25,000 Flow credits a month, 20 or 30 TB of storage and a YouTube Premium plan. It does not add a bigger context window: both Pro and Ultra list 1 million tokens.

Our Take: Pro for most people. Consider Ultra only if you hit Pro’s limits every week or need Deep Think or Flow volume.

⚠️ The Catch: Paying for Ultra today buys nothing Argon-related. Google names Ultra first for Argon but has given no date, and it says nothing about Pro either way.

💰 Google AI Pro vs Ultra: Plans and Prices (October 2026)

Google sells four paid levels in the US: Plus, Pro, Ultra 5x and Ultra 20x. Here is how Google’s plan comparison reads, with the Gemini limits expressed the way Google states them:

Pro on Google’s annual plan is $199.99 a year, which is $39.89 less than twelve monthly payments of $19.99 ($239.88). Google’s terms say you can cancel anytime, with no refunds for partial billing periods except as the law requires. If you are an eligible US college student, Google’s plans page and release notes advertise Google AI Pro free for one year (redeem by December 31, 2026; eligibility and terms apply), covered in our Google AI Pro free guide. For the cheapest tier, see our Google AI Plus review.

📊 What a Year Costs on Each Google AI Plan (USD, List Price)

💡 Key Insight: A year of Ultra 5x costs $960 more than a year of Pro paid monthly ($1,199.88 against $239.88). Figures are our arithmetic from Google’s monthly prices.

🎯 What Ultra Adds Over Pro (and What It Doesn’t)

Ultra’s headline is volume. Google lists “up to 20x higher usage limits” in Gemini than the Pro plan, plus first access to advanced features such as Deep Think, which Google reserves for Ultra, and Gemini Spark (in select countries). Gemini Spark also appears on the Pro plan. Ultra also lists higher access to Gemini 3.1 Pro (the highest on the 20x tier) and to Deep Research, Gemini Agent (US only, English only), the highest Jules coding-agent limits, and the highest Antigravity rate limits. Beyond the model, it bundles 10,000 or 25,000 monthly Flow credits against Pro’s 1,000, 20 or 30 TB of storage against Pro’s 5 TB, a full YouTube Premium plan against Pro’s Lite plan, and Project Genie, which Google says is only available with Ultra.

What Ultra does not add is a bigger context window. Google’s help center lists a 1 million token context window for both AI Pro and AI Ultra, which Google says lets Gemini understand up to 1,500 pages of text. The tiers below are smaller: 128k tokens on Plus and 32k with no plan.

🔍 REALITY CHECK

Marketing Claims: Ultra is “the highest level of access to the best of Google AI and exclusive features”.

What It Really Means: The exclusive features that Google’s own comparison shows are Deep Think and Project Genie. Most of the rest, including Gemini, Flow, Jules and Antigravity, appears on Pro at lower limits, and context window size is the same.

Verdict: Ultra is mostly the same product with bigger allowances. If a lower limit has never stopped you on Pro, Ultra’s extras are not for you.

⚖️ Price per Block of Usage

Ultra’s 5x tier costs $99.99, which is 5.0 times Pro’s $19.99 for 5 times the Gemini limit, so the price per Pro-sized block of usage stays at about $20. The 20x tier costs $199.99, or 10.0 times Pro’s price for 20 times the limit, which is about $10 per Pro-sized block. By our arithmetic, among the Pro and Ultra tiers the 20x tier is the only step where each block of Gemini usage gets cheaper (Plus, at 2x Free for $4.99, works out to about $10 per Pro-sized block too). It only makes sense if you would actually use 20x what Pro gives you. These are limits in the Gemini app, not a promise about every feature: Google’s help center says limits are compute-based, depend on prompt complexity, models and features used and chat length, refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, and may change without notice.

📈 Price vs Usage: Multiples of Google AI Pro

💡 Key Insight: Ultra 5x costs 5 times Pro for 5 times the limit. Ultra 20x costs 10 times Pro for 20 times the limit. Usage multiples are Google’s, price multiples are our arithmetic.

🚀 Gemini 4 Argon: Does Ultra Get It First?

Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026. The announcement says Argon is “rolling out to a set of trusted cyber defenders through our Fairwind Program”, and that wider release to developers, enterprises and consumers will start “with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers”. The post gives no dates. It does not mention Google AI Pro or the Gemini app. 9to5Google’s report says the same: rolling out soon, starting with Ultra subscribers and paid API customers.

As of October 10, Argon does not appear in the Gemini app release notes, whose newest entry is dated September 30 and covers skills, not a new model. TestingCatalog reports finding new subscription upgrade labels in Antigravity’s code, which it says suggests Ultra subscribers may reach Argon there first, but it notes this does not establish a release date. Online Tech Tips advises sticking with the assistant you already use for now.

🔍 REALITY CHECK

Marketing Claims: Argon will come “starting with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers”.

What It Really Means: It is a sequence, not a date and not a guarantee for any plan. Google says nothing about when, or whether, Pro gets Argon, so no one can tell you that it will or will not.

Verdict: Do not buy Ultra today for a model you cannot use yet. If Argon matters to you, check Google’s release notes before paying.

So the practical question is timing, not tier. Here is what that means for your wallet.

💡 Key Takeaway: Ultra is a bet on a future model, and Google has set no date. If you want Argon, the safer move is to wait for the rollout and then pay for one month of Ultra, since Google says you can cancel anytime.

🔀 One More Change: Gemini Model Access From October 9

Google’s help page “Changes to Gemini model access and limits” says that, starting October 9 for users without an AI subscription, model availability changes for personal accounts. Users without a plan get an Auto setting, where Gemini sends each prompt to the model that suits it: most prompts go to Flash-Lite, and prompts that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro. AI Plus subscribers get an email explaining when the changes reach them. Google’s older limits page and its plans page use different model names (Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro on the help page against 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.6 and 3.8 Flash and 3.1 Pro on the subscriptions page), so read model names with care.

⚔️ How the Prices Compare With ChatGPT and Claude

Google’s $19.99 Pro plan sits beside ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month and Claude Pro at $20 a month billed monthly. The top tiers line up too: Ultra starts at $99.99 and has a $199.99 tier, ChatGPT Pro has $100 and $200 tiers, and Claude Max starts at $100. We compare prices and Google’s stated limits, not model quality. For the other two, see our ChatGPT review and Claude AI review, and for what $20 buys elsewhere, Meta Muse vs ChatGPT.

👤 Who Should Pay for Which Plan?

Choose Plus ($4.99) if: you want more Gemini and 400 GB of storage without paying much, and Pro-model access at the “More” level is enough.

Choose Pro ($19.99, or $199.99 a year) if: you use Gemini daily, want 5 TB of storage, 1,000 Flow credits and a YouTube Premium Lite plan, and have not been blocked by the 4x limit. This is the right plan for most people.

Choose Ultra 5x ($99.99) if: you reach Pro’s limits every week, you need Deep Think, or you generate enough in Flow to need 10,000 credits a month. Check that you would use the 20 TB and YouTube Premium too, since they are part of the price.

Choose Ultra 20x ($199.99) only if: your usage is heavy enough to justify 20x Pro’s limit. For a lighter user it is the most expensive way to get the same app.

Skip Ultra if: your reason is Argon. Wait until Google dates it. Also check availability: Google’s subscriptions page lists AI Pro and AI Ultra in more than 150 countries each, and both appear on the help page’s country list for Pakistan and India.

❓ FAQs: Your Questions Answered

Q: How much is Google AI Ultra?

A: $99.99 a month for the 5x tier (5x the usage of Google AI Pro) and $199.99 a month for the 20x tier, in US dollars. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year.

Q: What is the difference between Google AI Pro and Ultra?

A: Ultra has 5x or 20x Pro’s usage limits, Deep Think, 10,000 or 25,000 Flow credits (Pro has 1,000), 20 or 30 TB of storage (Pro has 5 TB) and a full YouTube Premium plan. Both list a 1 million token context window.

Q: Will Google AI Pro get Gemini 4 Argon?

A: Google has not said. Its announcement names paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers first and does not mention Pro, so it neither promises nor rules out Pro.

Q: Can I use Gemini 4 Argon with Google AI Ultra today?

A: Google has announced no Ultra rollout as of October 10, 2026. It says Argon is going to trusted cyber defenders and testers, and it does not appear in the Gemini app release notes.

Q: Is Google AI Pro worth it, and is Google AI Ultra worth it?

A: Pro is for most people who use Gemini daily: $19.99 gets 4x the free usage, 5 TB of storage, 1,000 Flow credits and a YouTube Premium Lite plan. Ultra is worth it only if you hit Pro’s limits every week or need Deep Think or Flow volume. Plus at $4.99 may be enough if you mainly want storage.

Q: Can I cancel Google AI Ultra any time?

A: Yes. Google says you can cancel anytime, with no refunds for partial billing periods except as required by law.

Q: How do Gemini usage limits work?

A: They are compute-based: Google says they depend on prompt complexity, the models and features you use and the length of your chat. They refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, and you can extend them by buying AI credits.

Q: Is there a free Google AI Pro for students?

A: Google’s plans page says students get Google AI Pro free for one year, with eligibility and terms. See our Google AI Pro free guide.

Final Verdict: Pro for Most, Ultra for Heavy Users

Google AI Pro is the plan most people should pick: $19.99 a month buys 4x the free limits, 5 TB of storage, 1,000 Flow credits and the same 1 million token context window that Ultra lists. Ultra is for people whose bottleneck is volume or who need Deep Think, and the 5x tier is priced almost exactly like five Pros ($99.99 against $99.95). The one thing Ultra cannot sell you today is Argon. Google has named Ultra first without a date, and it has said nothing about Pro either way.

Verdict: PRO FOR MOST. Move to Ultra only if you hit Pro’s limits every week. Before you pay, check the live prices on Google’s Gemini subscriptions page, and check Google’s release notes for Argon.
